Quinta Nova Nossa Senhora do Carmo
Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo lies in the heart of the Douro Valley and has belonged to the Amorim family since 1999. The family's link to wine comes from its cork business with the Port export houses of Vila Nova de Gaia, and the project is now in the hands of the 4th generation.
With more than 250 years of history, the estate keeps its original structures and the 1764 cellar building, restored by architect Arnaldo Barbosa. The property is even older: it belonged to the Portuguese Royal House, with a first owner identified in 1725, and its winery produced more than 3,500 barrels of wine, soon becoming part of the region's first demarcation.
In June 2005 it opened the first hospitality project dedicated to wine in Portugal, initially named Burmester, set within the estate's 120 hectares. Quinta Nova – Relais & Châteaux has 11 rooms with views over the landscape, in a Douro wine estate where no detail is forgotten.
The Winery Restaurant, in the manor house's main room and on the terrace overlooking the vineyards that run down to the Douro, offers a menu of local, seasonal produce with a strong focus on sustainability.
Wine tourism activities include tastings, visits to the winery and barrel room, estate walks with a picnic break and boat or train tours in the region, among many other options.
