Quinta da Plansel

A little place where love of nature, wine, and art go hand in hand with a team that is so close and dedicated it's like a family.

This is a family that has always been linked to wine. The first records date back to the 11th century, but from the 18th century onwards the Bohm family's mission in the sector became more evident, and they were one of Germany's main wine importers and distributors.

Quinta da Plansel was born out of an endeavour by its founder, Jörg Böhm, when his sailing boat was shipwrecked in Cascais harbour in 1961. Forced to stay here for a while, he ended up getting to know and surrendering to the different Portuguese landscapes. That's how he realised that the Alentejo grape varieties had enormous wine-growing potential, and in 1975 he bought the first vineyard plots and set up Viveiros Plansel.

The passion for wine and Portugal would eventually infect the whole family. In the early 1990s, daughter Dorina Lindemann, an oenologist with a degree from the University of Geisenheim (Hessen), came to Portugal from Germany with her husband Thomas Lindemann and, taking advantage of the existing vineyards linked to her father's technical improvement programme, dedicated herself to wine production.

With the young engineer Paulo Laureano, Dorina Lindemann produced her first wine at the Adega Experimental da Mitra (University of Évora) in 1993. The first brand was Plansel (which stands for Selected Plants). Over the next five years, Dorina and her husband, Thomas, built their own winery, Quinta da Plansel.

Dorina's aim was to transfer all of her father's basic knowledge to oenology. The revival of old grape varieties has been the secret to differentiating these wines in terms of both quality and quantity. Today, daughters Júlia and Luísa are also part of the wine business, from marketing to oenology, guaranteeing the future of the project.

Today, the winery produces 400,000 litres a year and has diversified its products into five different ranges, with wines with very unique profiles. Quinta da Plansel is known above all for its work with the Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca grape varieties, its favourites.
