Enoturismo Cartuxa
Located in Évora, in the heart of the Alentejo, Cartuxa is one of the most prestigious wine houses in Portugal. Managed by the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, the estate's origins trace back to the Convento da Cartuxa, founded in the 16th century by Carthusian monks whose legacy remains alive in the name and spirit of the house.
Cartuxa is internationally known for Pêra-Manca, considered one of the rarest and most sought-after red wines in Portugal. Produced only in exceptional years, Pêra-Manca Tinto is a benchmark collectable. Other notable wines include Cartuxa Reserva, Foral de Évora, EA and Vinea, all with excellent quality-to-price ratios and broad recognition.
The estate covers around 700 hectares in the Alto Alentejo, planted with grape varieties such as Trincadeira, Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Antão Vaz, Roupeiro and Arinto. The winemaking takes place at the Adega Cartuxa, close to the historic city of Évora, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The wine tourism experience combines wine, gastronomy and culture. It includes a guided visit to Adega Cartuxa, wine tastings, Cartuxa olive oil tastings and visits to the Lagar (traditional press house) and the Pátio das Manjedouras. Premium programmes include food and wine pairings at Pousada de Évora or within the estate itself. The proximity to Évora makes it easy to combine the visit with the Roman Temple, the Cathedral and the Chapel of Bones.
