Vinhos Franco

The history of Vinhos Franco merges with the narrative of our family, people born and raised in a village in the municipality of Cartaxo, where wine production has always been a tradition.

Two grandfathers who always had vines, grandfather Chico created the brand that gave birth to us, Ponte da Serra, our bag in box.

At the time, Rui Franco, the Franco family's father, was self-employed as an accountant, working for a building materials company and helping his father-in-law with many activities, from vineyards to wine.

In 2002, still working part-time, we started producing bottled wine under the Barroca da Pata brand.

A few years later, grandfather Chico, despite remaining affectionate, left the business for health reasons, and we took the passion and work of our grandparents and started the current project, Vinhos Franco. Rui left accountancy and changed his life at the age of 40!

Around this time, we bought around 20 hectares of land to ensure the sustainability of the company.

In 2013, the Joana da Cana brand emerged, a wine certified by the Tejo Wine Commission, and from then on we have made a point of honouring the brand, the family, and the region.

In 2015, we recruited winemaker Hernâni Magalhães, who has greatly contributed to the quality of our products.

We are a family of four: Rui threw himself wholeheartedly into the project right from the start, Inês was won over in 2021 and Teresa and Leonor have parallel jobs, but they help in any way they can and the big decisions are made at the dinner table!

We are proudly from the Tejo Wine Region, a historic region with an unrivalled variety of terroirs. Of the three terroirs of the Tejo, we are from Bairro, a perfect terroir for wines with personality and exuberance.
