PicoWines
Picowines, recently named, was founded in 1949, by the effort of wine producers, trying to recover the noble grape varieties and the culture of the vineyard in little stone walls squares, which is now a landscape of 987 hectares, classified as World Heritage, by UNESCO, since 2004.
Initially was built with the intention of producing a white liqueur wine, but it was necessary, from an early stage, to proceed with the vinification of American grape varieties, called Direct Producer Hybrids, from which it's made the common red wine.
Located in the village of Madalena, it began its production in 1961, with 50 members, and 36 tons of white traditional grapes, namely Arinto dos Açores, Verdelho and Terrantez do Pico. Currently, we are the union of 250 associates that every year deliver their grapes, with the best quality, in order to produce different types of wine.
After the reconversion cycle of the vineyards, which took place in the 90s, new grape varieties were introduced, originating the most recent Picowines brands.
Here, the hand-picked grapes in the rocky vineyards, allow to preserve the authentic culture that has resorted to simple and fragile basalt stone walls, to protect the vineyards from the weather. Later on, they pass through modern equipment that allows the vinification of half a million litres, subdivided in white wines, rosé wine, red wines, fortified wines, sparkling wines and a variety of spirits.
