Czar Winery

Czar Winery, located in São Roque do Pico, is a family-run winery that aims to preserve Pico's unfortified wine history by producing high-quality wines that reflect the island's unique terroir. A legacy of the teacher José Duarte Garcia, continued by his son, Fortunato Garcia.

Its vineyards are located in Criação Velha, recognized, in 2004, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its extraordinary landscape, representing an excellent example of the adaptation of agricultural practices in a remote and challenging environment.

The vineyards were, and continue to be, planted in the fissures of the solid lava rock, protected from the ocean and the wind by an imposing pattern of ordered, long, linear walls, forming an extensive network of enclosed stone walled fields, or "currais". The endemic and, almost forgotten, species of Verdelho, Arinto dos Açores and Terrantez do Pico are the only grapes planted in the Czar vineyards.

The wines produced by Czar Winery are known for their excellence, rich flavors and distinctive, authentic character.

The dedication to preserving sustainable and traditional agricultural practices, whose origins date back to the 15th century, keeps intact the heritage, history, and integrity of Czar wine, served over the centuries on the tables of popes, kings, emperors, and czars.
