Caves Niepoort

With more than 150 years dedicated to Port wine, the Niepoort cellars, in Vila Nova de Gaia, are the guardians of knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation. This magical place, where the wines develop as if they navigated a different dimension of time, is where some of Niepoort’s most iconic wines slumber.

Providing optimal temperature and humidity conditions, these cellars preserve old Port wines in vats, wooden casks, bottles, and large bonbonne jars. Also known as demi-johns, these dark, hand-blown glass containers have a capacity of 7 to 13 liters and, were used in the pharmaceutical industry in the past. Eduard Niepoort acquired them in the 19th century in Germany, but it was his son Eduard Marius who filled them with the best wines from the 1931 vintage.

Niepoort, a family business dating back to 1842, initiated its winemaking tradition in the Douro Demarcated Region, with the production of Port wines. Knowledge, enthusiasm and an innovative mindset, passed down from generation to generation, have made Niepoort one of the most authentic and notable Portuguese wine producers.

There are six generations responsible for writing the history of the Niepoort family to the present day. They share a passion for wine, a passion that respects tradition but is not afraid to venture into new paths whenever the irreverent flower of creativity is called forth.

Dirk is the current head of the family, who inherited from his father Rolf the challenge of "innovating while maintaining good traditions". Nothing his profile wasn't already cut out for, or this fifth-generation member of the family wouldn't be a born curiosity seeker: attentive to everything going on around him, Dirk recognizes when a unique opportunity knocks on his door and acts without hesitation.

His children, Daniel, Marco and Ana, walk by his side, following in his footsteps so that the next chapters, in Niepoort's history, continue to be as full and generous as each harvest.
