Villa Oeiras

Villa Oeiras is a traditional quinta in the town of the same name, about 30 km from Lisbon. It is one of the few producers in Carcavelos, a region demarcated in 1908 with only 25 hectares, making it the smallest Designation of Origin in Portugal.

The Carcavelos tradition dates back to the 15th century, particularly with fortified wines, and reached its greatest expansion in the 18th century, driven by the Marquês de Pombal.

To revive this historic wine, Oeiras Town Council joined forces with Eng. Carneiro, chairman of the National Agronomic Station, who had replanted 5 ha of vines in 1983, and signed a collaboration protocol with the Station in 1988. It was the first time a Portuguese local authority took a role in producing a wine. The protocol was renewed in 1997 to restore Casal da Manteiga as a winery, opened in 2001 with a fully equipped wine press. In 2006 the council took over the exclusive running of the Station's vineyards and gave the winery a large wood ageing area with about 600 barrels. In 2012 it restored the Marquês de Pombal Palace Winery, increasing wood ageing to around 1,200 barrels.

Today Carcavelos Villa Oeiras is recognised nationally and internationally, with distinctions such as those received in 2020. The Casal da Manteiga Winery, the only facility operating in the demarcated region, also supports other producers.

Six centuries of a honey-toned, full-bodied wine, one of the four great Portuguese fortified wines.
