Quinta do Val Moreira
Located on the south bank of the Douro River, in Cima-Corgo, Quinta do Val Moreira was purchased by XVINUS in 2018 and upgraded for wine tourism. It has 23 hectares dedicated to the production of Port wines and high quality Douro wines, 2 hectares of olive trees and 2 hectares of almond trees. It offers fantastic views of the valley, where the Douro river and the Tedo river are protagonists.
Quinta do Val Moreira features an old 19th century map, well known at the time: The Baron of Forrester map. An unavoidable figure of the Douro Wine Region, I had the dream of making the Douro River navigable and safe to the Spanish border. This map earned him the reputation of cartographer and the title of Baron.
Today, the estate extends from the northern side of the Marmelal, a fairly old village whose charter of D. Sancho I dates from 1194. This royal document included our main vineyards and grounds facing Tedo and the Quintas of Nápoles and Carril.
Part of our vineyards is located in another affluent Douro valley, which had one of the largest water lines between Marmelal and Folgosa. They called it Valmor. These vineyards adjoin the ruins of the old house of “Quinta de Valmor” that belonged to the Viscount of Valmor, where he was awarded the prestigious Lisbon and Portuguese prize in the architecture field.
There are two Pombaline landmarks in the area, one near the small village of Marmelal, Quinta do Val Moreira and the Carril stream. These granite landmarks are classified as public interest real estate. The Marquis of Pombal had them built in 1757 and served to demarcate the area of the generous Douro wines, placed under the jurisdiction of the General Company of Agriculture of the Douro Vines. This created the first demarcated wine region in the world, a historical fact that makes the locals very proud.
