Quinta da Lapa
Quinta N. Sra. da Conceição da Lapa was acquired by D. Lourenço de Almeida in 1706. It lies among the fertile hills east of the Montejunto mountain, now part of the Tejo Wine Region, and extends over a hundred hectares.
D. Lourenço, son of the Count of Avintes, member of the Court's Council and former governor of Pernambuco and Minas Gerais in Brazil during the gold rush, set out to supply the thriving city of Lisbon with high quality wines. He built a manor house with a chapel, farm buildings and a wine cellar, in a reform dating from 1733.
Almost three centuries later, a new cellar was built and the vineyards were replanted with local varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Castelão, Aragonês, Trincadeira Preta, Fernão Pires, Alvarinho, Arinto and the rare Trincadeira das Pratas, plus international grapes such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Alicante Bouschet, Caladoc, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. The 1756 manor house was restored to welcome guests in comfort, preserving the chapel and the tile panel honouring Our Lady of Conceição da Lapa.
The wines have consistently earned national and international awards. In 2010, "Quinta da Lapa Red 2008 Reserve" was named "Best Wine in Contest" at Portugal's National Contest for Bottled Wines, and at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles the estate won three gold and two silver medals, the best result among Portuguese small to mid-size producers.
At Quinta da Lapa time flows with the seasons. Guests can explore the vineyard paths, the ponds and the spring-fed water tank house, and enjoy the silence just a stone's throw from Lisbon, with 300 years of winemaking tradition to taste.
