About the Activity
H.M. Borges, founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges, has dedicated more than a century to selecting and aging Madeira Wines. Managed today by the fourth generation of the family, the winery operates in a historic building in the center of Funchal, where it has been located since 1924.

This guided experience invites you to explore our centenary estate and learn about the production and aging process of Madeira Wine. The visit includes a tour through the winery, its history and its traditional winemaking methods.

The tasting takes place in our historic tasting room, built with 19th-century wood and decorated with paintings by Max Römer, where you will enjoy two Madeira Wines paired with mini honey cake and traditional honey biscuits.

After the tasting, feel free to explore our shop, the ideal place to find special bottles ranging from Frasqueiras to Dated Wines and exclusive Blends.

    “Friendly & excellent tour” Thoroughly enjoyed the H M Borges experience, which was very well hosted by Melissa, who had very good English & could answer all my questions. On the day we were just three of us - an English couple & Henrik (who spoke very good English).
    The history of the company, the way the wine is produced and finally the tasting were very well presented.
    It was our first try of Madeira - so tried a variety; 3 & 10 year old medium sweet & dry to get a better idea of the differences. Although very pleasant we didn't end up bringing any home. If I was asked to describe what it reminded me of sherry. Clearly our palates were not as discerning to pick up the subtleties of the ageing, which clearly makes the wine quite expensive.

    “Fantastic opportunity in the heart of Funchal” What a great little experience and so convenient to the centre of Funchal. Not a 10 minute walk from the ocean front and you’ll be at this awesome little winery. We arrived a little early to check in for our tour, and we’re greeted with friendliness and offering of facilities and seats as we waited for our guide. The tour was informative and the theme of friendliness continued. I was surprised with the knowledgeable staff as they answered questions that dug a little deeper about the grapes used and the processes taken that would only be known by those who are very passionate about their wine. The tour and tasting was about 20-25 minutes and the tasting can be as long as you like. While they were not pushing for sales at the end, you won’t want to walk away without a bottle or 2 of this delicious and unique-to-the-world Madeira wine! Marlin Toftager, 20 jul 2022
