This is a journey through the landscape of the vineyard culture of Pico Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.
The tour will start in Madalena, with a first stop in São Mateus. During this tour you will be able to observe the extension of the vineyards and how the wine production process has changed over time.
Along the coastline you will find many winery clusters and observe how life has changed in the last 200 years. Today they are places that seem abandoned, but the small wineries are used as weekend houses or even to produce local wine. Today, almost all the island's inhabitants still produce it for their own consumption.
In the protected vineyard area, you will find tide wells, stills, wine presses, old warehouses, “rola pipas”, “relheiras” and “solares”.
Next, you will head to the vineyards of “Criação Velha”, the heart of the UNESCO Heritage Site. During a short walking tour, you will learn about the reasons why Pico wine is so different and unique in the world.
At the end, at the Cooperativa Vitivinícola do Pico, you will have the opportunity to do a tasting of 3 wines, where you will discover the best nectars of the Azores.
Venture out and discover the best of the Azores!
