Peso da Régua City, in Vila Real is considered the center of the Douro Demarcated Region. The process of demarcation of the region began to be developed in the XVIII century, when Marquês de Pombal, Portugal’s Minister of State, ordered the production areas of the best wines to be marked with granite marks. Since then, the area of Peso da Régua has become a trading post were departing and arriving boats carrying wine to Vila Nova de Gaia.
The Alto Douro Vinhateiro, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, represents the landscape of the beautiful vineyards that characterizes the vast Douro Demarcated Region, the oldest regulated wine-growing region in the world. The landscape of this region combines the beautiful nature of the Douro Valley, made up of steep slopes, with the ancestral and continuous action of Man.
This intimate relationship between human activity and nature allowed the creation of a unique ecosystem, where the terrain features are taken advantage of in an exemplary way, with the modeling terraced landscape, preserving it from erosion and allowing the cultivation of the vineyard. Miguel Torga, one of the most important Portuguese poets, described this region as “an excess of nature. […] a geological poem. Absolute beauty.”.
